(an editorial...)

It's a strange and beautiful world.

About a year ago, I built a web page which featured my friends and me in drag. Bad drag. Humorously bad drag at that.

The intervening year has been interesting. Well, it's been interesting to me. I look at where I've been and I'm still amazed at much of it.

I look at where I am, and I'm still amazed.

A lot of things I could have predicted. A lot of things I should have predicted. And one wonderful thing happened I don't think I could have even imagined.

We'll go with the same format I used last year.

Who I am: Well, that hasn't appreciably changed. I'm Andrew Terrance Trembley. My friends call me Andy. Some of my friends call me Andries. Still other friends called me (at least for a time) William. I'm still a daoist capitalist member of the cultural elite, becoming more elite whenever I can. This is just confirmed through my newfound appreciation for ballet (and no, it's not just for the muscular guys in leotards... I enjoy watching from the balcony as much as I do from the front section of the main floor). The single part, well, I'm following a dream. I hope to wake and find it to be a reality.

Where I live: Hasn't changed either. The porch is in pieces, but that's just part of the continuing restoration work Lee has been doing on the house for the last 18 years. So, still Milwaukee, still Wisconsin.

What I get paid to do: Plan and implement improvements to a global messaging and groupware system (Lotus Notes) at Rockwell Automation. I'm a regular employee now. What does that say? It says they needed somebody quick, and they already knew what I'm capable of.

What I do in spite of not getting paid for it: Well, let's see...

  • I'm far less of an internet junkie. The computer and the internet are tools. They can be fun tools, but they're tools I get paid to use day in and day out for hours on end. I still like doing web design, but generally I only power up my computer at home to check email.
  • My vacation of choice is still a science fiction convention. I'm not sure if I'll go to Minicon again, there are great changes in the works. CostumeCon, however, is being added to my permanent schedule.
  • I'm not performing at Bristol Renaissance Fair this year. It was a blast, but it left me really wiped out. I haven't really had the time or enthusiasm for SCA either.
  • Music, on the other hand, has taken a somewhat bigger role in my life. We've been actually having monthly filks, and I'm playing Bass Recorder quite a bit (after playing it all last summer at Faire, I've become pretty comfortable on it). Still playing saxophone a bit too.
  • Haven't written much in the last year for publication or distribution. But I've been writing a lot...
  • I'm still hosting Stitch'n'Bitch (the bi-weekly meeting of the Metro-Milwaukee Unfinished Projects and Prairie Restoration Society). It's alternate Thursdays, at Lytheria. If you're in the Milwaukee area (or are going to be in the Milwaukee area) drop me an email and I'll get you schedule information and directions.
  • I found comic books. Odd comic books like Donna Barr's Desert Peach, Gay Comics, Those Annoying Post Brothers by Matt Howarth... the list goes on.
  • I found internet comics. They're my one remaining online vice. Argon Zark, Helen, Sweetheart of the Internet, Kevin&Kell, and User Friendly help keep me sane.
  • I'm not sure if I should say I've become more serious about bicycling, or that I've just decided not to let other things get in the way. At the moment, I'm doing about 6 miles a night, but I just got over a two-week chest cold. We'll see how long it takes to get me back up to 30 miles a day...
  • Oh, and I found leather. Or rather leather found me. Or something like that. It's sort of like saying Columbus found America. It was always there. It was never lost. Finding it in the form of a dear sweet man at a costuming convention, though, was an extremely pleasant surprise. It's an intense and personal journey, and getting there is all the fun.

Links: I'm going to try to limit each category to my two favorite links...

Macintosh Stuff...

  • I'm annoyed with Apple, so I've dropped the mac links. I hate to say it, but I could have as easily developed this page using Photoshop and Programmer's File Editor on Windows NT.

SF Stuff...

  • First Contact is a local science fiction convention here in Milwaukee

Gay Stuff...

Great web design...

  • The Enhanced for Netscape Hall of Shame says "If anyone thinks they can make better buttons than Doc Ozone I'd like to know."
  • Charley Parker writes the most amazing comic book I've seen on the web. It's called Argon Zark.

Far-flung friends...
